Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen Book Review!
Hey guy! It's Emma. Today, I have a book review on Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen. This book follows Sydney as she switches schools after her brother is arrested for a drunk driving accident. After her brother's conviction, Sydney is lost, trying to find her place in her family and the world. As she is going through this time, Sydney meets the Chathams, a loud loving family that owns a pizza parlor. Upon meeting this family, Sydney is brought into their crazy antics and meets Mac, who seems to understand Sydney and make her feel like someone is finally seeing her for her instead of her brother.First of all, I absolutely adored this book and it's characters. The main character, Sydney, was so well-developed and likable. However, in my opinion, the characters that truly made me love this book were the Chathams. This family was absolutely crazy and chaotic, but that's what I liked about them. Each character had their own little quirks like Layla only ate fries that lived up to her standards, Mac was a big dieter, or their older sister was really into ice skating. Reading about this family made me warm and cozy inside.
Second, the plot was very different from other books I've read. Unlike most YA contemporaries, this book covered some serious topics like drunk driving. I wasn't really used to that, but I found it very refreshing to see that. The plot in this book wasn't crazy fast like others, but I think it worked. In my opinion, this book was a little more character driven than plot driven so I wasn't stressing to keep up with the plot, but I wasn't bored out of my mind while reading it either, which I thought was perfect for this book.
Overall, I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars. It was such an amazing read. I had big expectations going into this book and it definitely lived up to them. Sarah Dessen did a wonderful job with creating a world that had fantastic characters and covered tough topics amazingly. I highly recommend this book to people who love YA contemporaries or love Sarah Dessen's books.
